Cristian Romero has returned to training with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday as preparations continue for the new Premier League season, but speculation surrounding the captain’s future remains a major talking point.
The Argentine defender was among the players due back at Hotspur Way following his involvement at the World Cup this summer. His return under normal circumstances would provide Roberto De Zerbi with one of the team’s best players, however it does not look like the Italian will have the defender for much longer.
Romero’s stay in North London is rumored to be very close to coming to an end, with Altético Madrid making the needed sales in order to pursue the Spurs captain.
The Spanish side are expected to submit a new offer worth around £34 million. A price many fans would argue is lower than his true value, it will be a disappointing end to his career at Tottenham Hotspur, as the Argentinian’s clear desire to leave most likely hurt the club in negotiations.
Romero has been a key figure at Tottenham since arriving from Atalanta in 2021 and was named club captain last summer. His aggressive defending and ability on the ball have made him an important part of the Spurs back line, while his current contract runs until 2029.
For now, Romero is back with his Tottenham teammates and preparing for the season ahead. But with Atlético pushing to secure his signature and the transfer window still open, fans will be waiting for the “Here we go” any day now.
