Here We Go: A Wild 26-Hour Ride
Written by Dustin Gentile
Let’s begin with a simple question… When you woke up on the morning of June 30th, 2026, were you expecting Tottenham Hotspur Football Club to dominate the world of club football news? Sure, the club has been making some news in the transfer market with four new signings in the first wave of an extended window. That was a great start. Keyword: START. If this was all the club was going to do, I still think supporters would have felt like the window was incomplete.
Shortly after, there was talk about some BIG names that Spurs were in talks with. This was not new news for the club. As supporters, we are used to seeing big names linked with Spurs, only for the rumors to fizzle out: Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White, Bruno Fernandes, Piero Hincapié, Anthony Gordon, Jack Grealish, Paulo Dybala. So when two of the top names available this transfer window were linked with Spurs, I think we all were hopeful yet skeptical that the club would end up seeking a cheaper alternative. A younger, versatile player with a look towards the future. Names like Jack Clarke (who is still the ultimate trivia question when it comes to Spurs transfer history), GK Nkoudou, Bryan Gil, and Marcus Edwards.
Then, those rumors did not go away. While the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal entered the chat, Spurs remained. When the big names started posting about these players - Dave Ornstein, Alasdair Gold, Fabrizio Romano - Spurs remained. Surely it was just a matter of time. Even when it seemed to come down to Spurs and another one of their rivals, I think we all were nervous. Those clubs were all headed to next season’s Champions League. Spurs were headed for the 2nd round of the League Cup with the likes of teams from England’s third and fourth divisions. What are the odds these huge talents would trade Europe’s top level for a side that literally staved off relegation on the final day of the season?

“Tottenham agree club record deal for Mateus Fernandes, HERE WE GO!”
THEY’VE DONE IT! Spurs have splashed the cash to bring in West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes! The Tottenham Hotspur FC transfer record now sits at £85M. That is something that I was not expecting. Manchester United was lurking, and most outlets doubted the North London side could pull it off.
United fans thought the chances of losing out to Spurs were as likely as a “butterfly challenging a Rottweiler” or as “Brad Pitt standing with a woman at the bar … and then Bilbo Baggins comes in and tries comes in and … [saying] ‘do you want to feel in my pocket and play with my ring?’ [and she goes with him].” Well, you know what, I guess this girl wanted to touch the ring.
It was a moment when Spurs made United stand and take notice. Times are changing. This is not the same club that went 18-months without making a new signing. This is a new era. Spurs are willing to take a risk on a premium talent and dare! With Spurs signing Mateus Fernandes, I see the club finding a player who can drive Roberto De Zerbi’s style of play and provide progressive play that Spurs desperately need. He is described as a “press-resistant midfielder” who is more than capable of short, intricate passes in tight spaces as well as connecting on long-range passes. This should be a huge benefit for the club as Spurs could not build into attack from the midfield, which is a strength for the Portuguese midfielder.
Fernandes represents another step in the De Zerbi plan that has a lot of people excited for both the short-term future and the long run. He marks a crop of young talent under contract into the 2030s. Xavi Simons, Mathys Tel, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Luka Vusko- wait…

“EXCLUSIVE: Brighton agree deal to sign Luka Vušković from Tottenham, here we go!”
I’m sorry… WHAT???
Did Spurs just really sell arguably their most premium asset? Just a few weeks ago, I was writing my first piece for Spurs Daily saying that the club would not decide on the defender until AFTER the World Cup. The World Cup is far from over… unless you are among the likes of Germany, Turkey, or Bosnia. What are we doing?
Here are my exact words from my article, Mid-June Transfer Talk, here on Spurs Daily:
“Personally, I think Vuskovic needs to at least start the season with the club. We all know the club’s recent history with injuries among the squad, and I think it would benefit all parties for Vuskovic to get some early minutes. … We need to see Vuskovic in a Spurs shirt this season. Letting him walk now makes all the effort and time poured into the player seem moot.”
I stand by these words. As I write this piece, I am still skeptical that Spurs may have made a mistake letting this player walk before even playing a literal second of competitive football for the club. Obviously, Brighton is looking to replenish after selling Jan Paul van Hecke. The Seagulls have made a habit of making savvy moves for players that may not have the hype around them at the time of their transfer, but have a significant return on investment. That was the case with van Hecke as Brighton bought the defender from the Dutch side NAC Breda for £5.6M back in 2020. They turned that into a nearly £47M profit when Spurs completed his transfer earlier this window.
I would not be surprised if Brighton were able to do the same with Vuskovic by 2030. That being said, it would mean Spurs could net a cool £8-10M as part of their sell-on clause for the Croatian, which is not nothing. It could be Spurs who make the big money move as they also have matching rights to any move for Vuskovic, as reported by the likes of Alasdair Gold. I am not saying it is a certainty, but it is definitely a non-zero chance.
Those two transfer moves would have been enough to dominate the transfer news this first weekend of July. But a second look at Fabrizio Romano’s declaration also brought forth another little sliver… “Spurs ready to go ALL IN for Sandro Tonali.”
For those of you who are unaware of what this final line is alluding to, let me hit you with some knowledge.
Sandro Tonali is an extremely talented midfielder who signed with Newcastle in 2003 for a sum of £60.4M, which made him the most expensive Italian player of all-time. In his three seasons in Northern England, he was a key player in the Magpies’ first domestic cup in SEVENTY years as well as two trips to the Champions League. The highs were not without their lows as his first season was cut short by a long-term suspension for gambling. Things took another hit this summer when his representatives informed Newcastle that he wished to leave the club before the transfer window closed in September.
Our interest picked up shortly after this as Fabrizio Romano reported in June that Tonali had agreed to personal terms with Spurs. This opened the floodgates of other reports that clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal were also interested. This led to the links of Spurs and Tonali to start to dissipate, while other links heavily communicated that Tonali preferred a move to Arsenal over Spurs. They stated that it was only a matter of time until Arsenal took control of the race and signed the player. Many saw it as inevitable that the Italian would land with the Premier League champions; Fabrizio Romano was not one of those reporters.
As June closed, he continually reiterated that Spurs were heavily pursuing Tonali and he saw no need to report on other clubs’ interest in Tonali. Which brings us to 8:31 PM GMT on July 1, 2026. I was standing in the dairy section of the grocery store, grabbing cream cheese and sour cream for a family taco pasta night. I was holding a bag of shredded cheese when my watch buzzed with a text from my buddy JR. That’s when the news broke:
July 1st - 8:31 PM GMT / 3:31 AM EDT / 12:31 PM PDT
“EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham agree record deal to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, HERE WE GO!”
I won't repeat exactly what I replied to JR, but to say I was excited is an understatement. Before 2024, Spurs’ record signing was Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon. The midfielder was viewed as the missing piece from Mauricio Pochettino’s team, which needed a skilled midfielder to take the squad to the next level. That nearly £64M move turned out to be an omen as Pochettino was sacked just before Thanksgiving that same year, and Ndombele never rose to the heights he was expected to, and his Spurs career was, simply put, a flop. That was then; this is now.
The Tonali move came in at a staggering £100M, including add-ons. Tottenham Hotspur FC just willingly spent NINE FIGURES on an incoming transfer. This is not just a big move. It is a statement from the North London side. Spurs are saying, “We are not merely satisfied with staying up after a rocky season. We are a top-tier club in the best league in the world.” This is the club going all-in on a manager who literally saved them from an ugly future in the Championship. This is a club finally turning financial stability into on-field success.
This move, along with yesterday’s Mateus Fernandes signing, provides Tottenham with one of the strongest midfields in the Premier League. The two newest signings will fit in front of the backline nicely for Roberto De Zerbi. In his preferred 4-2-3-1, Fernandes and Tonali seem to slot in nicely with the options in the #10, whether it be Xavi Simons or James Maddison. Tonali’s inclusion in RDZ’s system allows Spurs’ four attacking players the ability to remain high in attack, allowing Spurs' four attacking players to remain high up the pitch to execute the high press we saw at the end of the 2026 season. He provides true leadership and a calming presence on the pitch. He profiles as the exact type of player who will drive Roberto De Zerbi’s team to success. Now, we just need to see it happen on the field.
