Long-term Lucas?

Tottenham Hotspur FC has signed Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall to a new contract. While the club’s official website did not offer any specific terms on the new deal, the move does come as a bit of a surprise among supporters after rumors surfaced all summer that the midfielder was unhappy with his lack of minutes following the arrival of manager Roberto De Zerbi and was hoping for a move elsewhere. Spurs remained firm that only an offer in excess of £60 million would have them consider moving the 20-year-old, which seemed to keep lurking clubs like Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest at bay.
In a quote from the club website, Bergvall said, “I think we're building something great here. It's an exciting time for the Club, and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract. I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch, and I know this is the right place to do that. Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team — performances, goals and assists — to help as much as I can. I'm getting better every day in training, and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”
The new deal is another indication that Bergvall remains firmly in Spurs’ long-term plans, particularly given that he signed a contract extension with the club less than 17 months ago. That extension was set to keep him in North London until the end of the 2030-31 season. Based on his quote in the official press release, it seems like his tenure with the club may extend well into the mid-2030s. The remarkable thing about that is that Bergvall has committed his prime years to Spurs with this contract. If De Zerbi and the club can get this rebuild right, it is clear that Bergvall will be a key component of that success.
Bergvall is not the only one excited about his new contract. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi sang his praises, saying, “Every day in training you can see Lucas' desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level. Lucas is brave; he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process, and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better. I believe his best football is still ahead of him, and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.” While the relationship between player and coach seemed dicey at best this summer, it now seems as if the reports that Bergvall “desperately” wanted out were far from the mark.
Club sporting director Johan Lange also spoke glowingly about locking up the Sweden international for the long term.
“Lucas is an outstanding young player with enormous potential,” commented Lange, “and we are delighted that he has committed his future to the Club. From the moment he arrived, he has demonstrated not only his technical ability and intelligence on the pitch, but also the character we expect from our players. Lucas has a fantastic attitude to his work; he is eager to learn and improve every day, and he has become an important part of the group. This new contract is a reflection of our belief in Lucas and the role we see him playing both now and in the future of the Club.”
So, what is the long-term play with this new contract?
My hope is that Bergvall will spend the best years of his football career in Lilywhite. The greater hope is that when the club experiences success like that night in Bilbao, Bergvall will be at the heart of that success alongside the plethora of young talent that Spurs seem to be cultivating under Roberto De Zerbi.
There is certainly a scenario where Spurs are using this contract to push Bergvall’s price tag from £60 million to a figure closer to the nine figures the club spent on the signing of Sandro Tonali this summer. But there is also a reality where my hope and the club’s hopes for future financial success can both become true.
Regardless of which reality comes to fruition, what we do know is that Lucas Bergvall is on the books with Spurs for the better part of the next decade.
